All aboard the Super Bowl bandwagon, 2010 Edition

Come on, did anyone really think I could choose otherwise?

New-Orleans-Saints

Please — much as we Broncos fans loathe because he’s killed us for years now admire the class act and surgeon-like quarterback precision that is Peyton Manning, I think you’ll find most of us hopping on “The Streetcar Named ‘Who Dat?’”. Mainly because, hey — Peyton got his already! Mo-om! Peyton’s hogging all the cookies!

No, it’s really more like this — we love the underdog when our dog isn’t in the hunt, and the Broncos very much benefited from this feeling from all around the country if not the world when they wore that hat in 1996-97 against the “Hey, Brett got his already!” Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII. Maybe not so much the next year against the never-been-there-before-or-since Atlanta Falcons, but Hah! That didn’t matter! Woo Hoo!! REpeat!! John Elway retires a champ!!! be that as it may, time for Broncos fans to pay it forward. This blog hereby does — a Mile High Salute to ya, Who Dat Nation!

We expect etoufee in return.

(PS: For any New Orleans fans to whom the Super Bowl staple “guacamole” is an alien substance, I have a good recipe. Finding avocados down there, though, you’re on your own. Try asking your produce people for “alligator pears”; it might help.)

This is karma, as applied to crybabies:

A moment of silence, please…

…for the greatest Denver Broncos fan ever — and forever more — Tim “The Barrel Man” McKernan:

The NFL’s most recognizable and venerable “superfan”, who served more than 30 years as the face of Broncos Country, died this morning of lung failure at his home in Gunnison. We still have the team program he signed for our son in the South Stands at Invesco Field during a Sunday night game against the Seahawks in 2001. It was an honor to meet and talk with him; The Dude and I agree that it was an even bigger and way more cool part of our night than getting on TV behind David Treadwell’s stand-up before the game.

The condolences of both the Steiner and Bucci families go out to the McKernan family, and the family of Broncos fans around the world who are also deeply saddened.

The Church of the Divine Reception gets a little bit more divine…

It occurs to me that new readers here may not be acquainted with the fact that our family religion is football. Thus it is with a proper amount of reverence that I offer the following commentary:

As a general rule, matters of faith leave little room for superstition, and if the Broncos had lost either of the games in which they wore those abominations, I would be sorely tempted. However, they enter Baltimore this morning (by Mountain damn I hate losing an hour of sleep Standard Time) with a surprisingly righteous record of 6-0 and a week of rest.

At the beginning of this season, not one talking head football commentator could entertain the idea that the off-season changes the Broncos made — coaching staff, quarterback, running backs, hell for all I know the beer and food vendors — would result in as many wins the Broncos now have for the entire season. I’m on the record somewhere (not here) as saying then, “I refuse to panic”. I now go on the record as saying, “I refuse to exult”. I shall simply adhere to the advice of Confucius: The first principle in riding a tiger is to hold on tightly to his ears.

And maybe I’ll say a little prayer.

My belated comment on Sunday’s Broncos game:
